A tummy tuck (& mini tummy tuck), also known as an Abdominoplasty is a popular procedure to remove excess fat & loose skin from the tummy area, and tightening the abdominal muscles in order to produce a slimmer & firmer stomach area.

An abdominoplasty, or full tummy tuck, ideal for those who have loose skin and fat (an “overhang”) and can restore the contours of the abdomen.
It is a procedure where the skin and fat below the umbilicus (belly button) is removed using a scar that runs from hip to hip hidden inside the silhouette of the underwear. The upper abdomen is then re-draped and the umbilicus re-positioned. Abdominal muscle weakness can accentuate a bulge, so the muscles of the abdomen are usually tightened up to correct this. It requires a general anaesthetic, takes around 2-3 hours and usually involves a stay in hospital for 1 night after the surgery.
A mini abdominoplasty, also known as the mini tummy tuck, is ideal for those who have a little loose skin and fat below the umbilicus as is typically seen in slimmer ladies after having children.
It is a similar procedure to the full abdominoplasty to remove skin and fat but the technique uses a scar just above the pubic area, hidden inside the silhouette of the underwear. By contrast to a standard abdominoplasty, the umbilicus (belly button) is not re-positioned, the scar is often shorter and drains are also not typically used. It requires a general anaesthetic, takes around 1-2 hours and can be performed as a day case.
The procedures are not a method of weight loss, but can give the confidence to kick-start a general lifestyle change that comprises of changes in diet and increased exercise.

6 Stages to Surgical Success!
There is nothing to be shy about, our team are dedicated advisers for cosmetic surgery and speak with many women and men like yourself every day. When you get in touch, we will answer any questions no matter how small, and help you choose the surgeon that is right for your concerns or goals.
We offer direct consultations with your chosen surgeon at your very first visit. So you can get quality time with the person who could perform your abdominoplasty surgery. The surgeon can examine your stomach area and assess the issues you have with excess fat, an ‘overhang’, tissue or loose (saggy) skin.
All of our surgeons are accredited by the General Medical Council in the UK, are members of BAAPS & BAPRAS and have profiles you can view on our website. Offering you experience, safety and the gold standard of care.
During your consultation, which normally last around 20-45 minutes, you can ask as many questions as needed, and hear from the surgeon about the procedure, your recovery, what results can be achieved and any risks that may be involved.
Before any abdominoplasty surgery can take place, we will invite you to attend a pre-operative assessment in clinic. Here you will meet the nurse who will perform a series of checks to make sure you a medically fit for surgery. We check all patients for MRSA and may conduct some blood/urine tests too. One of the main parts of the pre-operative assessment for a tummy tuck is taking photographs to have a medical record of your stomach area before surgery.
You will have time to ask as many questions as needed, and the Nurse will be on hand to guide you through your final days before surgery including what to bring, when to arrive and how to prepare on the day.
On the day of surgery, you will attend our own private hospital in Newton-le-Willows. There is free on-site parking and on arrival, you will check-in at reception and then be greeted by the Nurse who will take you to your room, a beautiful and clean en-suite for your every comfort. The Surgeon will also visit to check you are fit and well and ask for final consent before proceeding to theatre. Once sedated with a general anaesthetic, the surgeon will perform the abdominoplasty procedure, removing excess fat, tissue and skin.
Following surgery, you will not be abandoned! You will be invited to come into clinic and see the Surgeon/Nurse regularly, typically at 1, 2, 6 and 12 weeks after surgery. This allows the Nurse or Surgeon to check your healing, overall recovery and take further photographs to record the changes in your results.
We have a comprehensive aftercare programme with unlimited cover post surgery. You can come into clinic as many times as you want, we’re here to make sure you have the best possible results and a comfortable recovery. For your reassurance, you will have 24/7 access to our Nurse with a direct number for any urgent concerns.
Will there be scarring after tummy tuck surgery?
You can expect scarring from this procedure. It is common to have a scar running across the full width of your lower tummy area and around the belly button. This is normally aligned to your underwear line so that it can be concealed with your day to day clothing. The appearance of the scan can take unto 12 months to improve but will not disappear completely. Your surgeon can explain this fully within your consultation.
When can I exercise after tummy tuck surgery?
You should avoid any strenuous physical activity, exertion through work or sport and gym exercise during the first 4 – 6 weeks following surgery. This prevents any increased fluid accumulation and enables your body to focus upon healing faster for a full recovery.
When can I drive after tummy tuck surgery?
You can drive again when you feel comfortable and physically able to control the car (such as being able to perform an emergency stop). This is commonly around 2 – 3 weeks following tummy tuck surgery but is highly dependant on how fast you are recovering and have suitable body strength & control to be able to safely drive and meet the terms of your driving license; you should always inform your insurance company.
When can I return to work after tummy tuck surgery?
This would depend on the nature of your job and how you are progressing with your recovery. It is common to require 2-3 weeks off work or as tolerated (everybody is different). If you are an office worker, doing only light administrative tasks, you will be physically able to return quicker than a person who has a more physical job. If you need to move/lift heavy items or have a very hands on job, it would be ideal to arrange a couple of weeks of lighter tasks upon your return too, as exertion can cause side-effects and reduce your ongoing recovery.
What can I expect to feel after tummy tuck surgery?
After you have been discharged from our hospital after having a Tummy Tuck procedure, you would leave with pain relief, dressings and a support/pressure garment (corset) on your tummy, or tummy control pants. You will not be able to drive therefore someone would need to drive you home. It is recommended that you have someone stay with you for the following 24 hours after leaving hospital. Your support garment should be worn for 6 weeks for your comfort and to help with healing.
Your aftercare package with Pall Mall Cosmetics will include a full programme of post-operative care. This will involve clinical review/checks of your wounds to make sure you are healing well.
An abdominoplasty is a complex procedure and many patients can expect to see some common side effects. These include but are not limited to:
- Standing up straight is difficult – it may feel like your tummy is being pulled and this feeling will improve as your recovery progresses following surgery
- Pain and bruises – this is very common and your surgeon will discharge you from hospital with medication for pain relief
- Numbness in your tummy area – This will improve with your recovery
- Fluid swelling above your scars – this is mostly temporary and will improve with your recovery
“I had my pre-op with Nurse Maxine. I was made to feel comfortable straight away and all of my questions were answered. My surgery was on 8th Jan and Maxine was there to book me in and put my mind at rest.”
“I went to 3 other companies before Pall Mall Cosmetics and the second I called them my mind was made up. My surgeon, Mr El Gawad was outstanding and I’ve ended up with everything I always wanted.”
