There is nothing to be shy about, our team are dedicated advisers for cosmetic surgery and speak with many men like yourself every day. When you get in touch, we will answer any questions no matter how small, and help you choose the surgeon that is right for your chest concerns.
We offer direct consultations with your chosen surgeon at your very first visit. So you can get quality time with the person who could perform your surgery. The surgeon can examine your chest area and assess the issues you have with gynaecomastia, excess fat, tissue or loose skin.
All of our surgeons are accredited by the General Medical Council in the UK, are members of BAAPS & BAPRAS and have profiles you can view on our website. Offering you experience, safety and the gold standard of care.
During your consultation, which normally last around 20-45 minutes, you can ask as many questions as needed, and hear from the surgeon about the procedure, your recovery, what results can be achieved and any risks that may be involved.
Before any gynaecomastia surgery can take place, we will invite you to attend a pre-operative assessment in clinic. Here you will meet the nurse who will perform a series of checks to make sure you a medically fit for surgery. We check all patients for MRSA and may conduct some blood/urine tests too. One of the main parts of the pre-operative assessment for male breast reduction is taking photographs to have a medical record of your chest area before surgery.
You will have time to ask as many questions as needed, and the Nurse will be on hand to guide you through your final days before surgery including what to bring, when to arrive and how to prepare on the day.
On the day of surgery, you will attend our own private hospital in Newton-le-Willows. There is free on-site parking and on arrival, you will be greeted by the Nurse who will take you to your room, a beautiful and clean en-suite for your every comfort. The Surgeon will also visit to check you are fit and well and ask for final consent before proceeding to theatre. Once sedated with a local or general anaesthetic, the surgeon will perform the male breast reduction through a small incision, removing fat and any excess tissue. The operation is quick and simple with a short recovery time
Following surgery, you will not be abandoned! You will be invited to come into clinic and see the Surgeon/Nurse regularly, typically at 1, 2 and 6 weeks after surgery. This allows the Nurse or Surgeon to check your recovery and take further photographs to record the changes in your chest profile.
We have a world-class aftercare programme with unlimited cover post surgery. You can come into clinic as many times as you want, we’re here to make sure you have the best possible results.
When can I return to work after male breast reduction surgery?
This would depend on the nature of your job and how you are progressing with your recovery. It is common to require 1 week off work, but if you are an office worker, doing only light administrative tasks, you will be physically able to return much quicker than a person who has a more physical job. If you need to move/lift heavy items or have a very hands on job, it would be ideal to have longer for recovery period of 1-2 weeks off. It would be recommended to arrange a couple of weeks of lighter tasks after your procedure, as exertion can cause side-effects and reduce your recovery.
How long will I keep my bandages on after male breast reduction surgery?
The dressings used by the surgeon after your gynaecomastia operation will remain on usually during the first 1-2 weeks. The exact length of time will depend on how quickly your wounds heal, and whether your surgeon chooses to use dissolvable stitches or removing these during your follow up appointments in clinic.
What can I wear after male breast reduction surgery?
For the first 1- 2 weeks after surgery you may be asked to wear an elasticated garment to provide support to your chest. This is required both during the day and overnight. It is important you have some support during the first 24 – 48 hours after surgery to help you at home. You must always have a chaperone (whether friend or family) to take you home when discharged.
When can you exercise after male breast reduction surgery?
You should avoid any strenuous physical activity, exertion through work or exercise during the first 2 – 3 weeks following surgery. This prevents any increased fluid accumulation and enables your body to focus upon healing faster.
When can you drive after male breast reduction surgery?
You can drive when you feel physically able to during your recovery. This is commonly around 1 – 2 weeks following surgery but is highly dependant on how fast you are recovering and regaining strength and suitable body control to be able to safely drive and meet the terms of your driving license.
How long does the operation for male breast reduction take?
Most surgeons will explain that a typical gynaecomastia procedure in theatre takes approx 120-150 minutes (around 2-3 hours). Although this can vary person to person. You will remain in hospital straight after surgery, with some patients being allowed to return home same day, and some may require 1x overnight stay. You will be given suitable advice when your theatre time is booked.
What Causes Gynaecomastia?
Gynaecomastia is a medical condition, the presence of excess breast tissue can occur for a number of reasons including weight loss, changes during puberty or a hormone imbalance that could cause increased levels of oestrogen and sometimes cause breast tissue to grow. If you have lost weight, surgery is a common solution to remove excess, saggy skin and tighten the appearance of your chest area.
Gynaecomastia is a common condition that affects men of all ages, from teenage boys to older men. It can affect men at any time in your life and therefore Male Breast Reduction Surgery is an option if you have this condition.
When is surgery not suitable?
Surgery is not for some men, especially when larger breasts are caused solely by excess fat from being overweight. Reshaping the male breast is not a weight loss solution, and your surgeon can advise you if a normal weight loss programme would be more suitable. This will reduce your risks without the need for surgery under general anaesthetic.
Living With Gynaecomastia
Dubbed ‘man-boobs’ by the media, gynaecomastia can be an upsetting condition to live with for physical and emotional reasons. In some cases, the chest area can be tender to touch or painful.
Many men have tried to reduce the effects by dietary changes, training hard, performing workouts in the gym, or increasing other forms of physical exercise. Though sometimes excess fat or tissue in the chest area cannot be burnt off, and remains stubborn and needs surgical intervention to remove; a reason that men across the UK choose to undergo cosmetic surgery with ourselves.
Why Do I Need To Go Private?
The NHS does not commonly carry out male breast reductions unless there is an associated and significant distress or pain. For this reason, many men choose to have the procedure done at a private healthcare clinic such as Pall Mall Cosmetics. There is no waiting list, and you do not need any referral to have an operation performed.
We can ensure your safety at our CQC (care quality commission) regulated hospital in Newton-le-Willows and city centre clinics in Manchester or Liverpool. Our surgeons mostly come from the NHS, so you get the same quality of surgery, but in a safe, clean and professional private clinical environment.
Our surgeons also strive for excellence, being members of BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) and BAPRAS (British Association of Plastic & Reconstructive Aesthetic Surgeons). A clear demonstration of our ability to meet the gold standard of care you would expect from an elite surgical hospital.
