Breast Reduction Surgery
Reduce the size & shape of overly large or heavy breasts, removing discomfort or enhance proportionality
Many women have breasts that are large & heavy and cause pain and discomfort – typically to the neck and/or back. Sometimes the size of the breasts is so large that women struggle with certain activities such as exercise or even climbing stairs. Naturally, this causes distress and can reduce self-esteem and confidence.
Breast reduction is a procedure that allows a surgeon to remove excess fat, tissue and skin – it can be done for one breast (unilateral) or both breasts (bilateral). Women say to us how pleased they are after surgery, knowing the size & shape of their breasts are much more proportionate to their body, and that they can finally wear the clothes and do the activities that they want to!

Also known as a mammoplasty, breast reduction surgery is an operation that removes the excess weight and volume of the breasts. The breasts are then reshaped and the nipples are repositioned to form new smaller breasts.
If you feel that your breasts are overly large, are not in proportion to the rest of your body or are causing you pain & discomfort, you may want to consider breast reduction surgery.
There are many factors that can affect the size of women’s breasts, such as:
- Inherited genes
- Body weight
Having breast reduction surgery has many benefits, these include:
- Reducing the size of your breast can leave you feeling more comfortable as it can help eliminate the constant pain of indentation from bra straps, skin irritation, back and neck pain and posture problems.
- Allowing more comfortable involvement in sporting activities that otherwise would be painful or awkward with large, heavy breasts
- A change in your appearance. Having large breasts that are out of proportion to your height and weight can be embarrassing and frustrating. For teenagers and young women this may be the case especially wearing swimsuits and various clothing due to unwelcome attention and the size/fitting of many high-street brands.
- Increased confidence. It may be the case you feel & look better in clothes and are pain free, boosting both your mood and confidence.
Your body and breasts are unique to you. We don’t apply a “one size fits all” approach to breast reduction surgery – you will have your own goals and expectations whether to relieve pain and discomfort or for cosmetic reasons.

6 Stages to Surgical Success!
There is nothing to be shy about, our team are dedicated advisers for cosmetic surgery and speak with many women like yourself every day. When you get in touch, we will answer any questions no matter how small, and help you choose the surgeon that is right for your breast concerns.
We offer direct consultations with your chosen surgeon at your very first visit. So you can get quality time with the person who could perform your breast surgery. The surgeon can examine your breast and assess the issues you have, whether asymmetry, pain and discomfort or over sized.
All of our surgeons are accredited by the General Medical Council in the UK, are members of BAAPS & BAPRAS and have profiles you can view on our website. Offering you experience, safety and the gold standard of care.
During your consultation, which normally last around 20-45 minutes, you can ask as many questions as needed, and hear from the surgeon about the procedure, your recovery, what results can be achieved and any risks that may be involved.
Before any reduction surgery can take place, we will invite you to attend a pre-operative assessment in clinic. Here you will meet the nurse who will perform a series of checks to make sure you a medically fit for surgery. We check all patients for MRSA and may conduct some blood/urine tests too. One of the main parts of the pre-operative assessment for breast reduction is taking photographs to have a medical record of your chest area before surgery.
You will have time to ask as many questions as needed, and the Nurse will be on hand to guide you through your final days before surgery including what to bring, when to arrive and how to prepare on the day.
On the day of surgery, you will attend our own private hospital in Newton-le-Willows. There is free on-site parking and on arrival, after checking in, you will be greeted by the Nurse who will take you to your room, a beautiful and clean en-suite for your every comfort. The Surgeon will also visit to check you are fit and well and ask for final consent before proceeding to theatre. Once sedated with a general anaesthetic, the surgeon will perform the breast reduction. Once completed, you will be taken back to your en-suite room to rest and recover until you are safe and ready to be discharged back home.
Following surgery, you will not be abandoned! You will be invited to come into clinic and see the Surgeon/Nurse regularly, typically at 1, 2, 6 and 12 weeks after surgery if needed. This allows the Nurse or Surgeon to check your recovery and take further photographs to record the changes in your breast profile.
We have a world-class aftercare programme with unlimited cover post surgery. You can come into clinic as many times as you want, and have peace of mind from 24/7 access to our Nurse who can discuss any urgent concerns.
We’re here to make sure you have the best possible results and a comfortable recovery.
What size will my breasts be reduced to?
Your surgeon will examine you and your breasts in proportion to your body to see roughly how much tissue can be removed and still give you a natural in proportion breast shape. The surgeon will discuss the various options with you and will make recommendations that are appropriate and suitable to you.
What procedure will be done?
There are several different surgical techniques to reshape the breasts. All of them will involve a scar around the areola of the breast. Each method uses different techniques, which result in different scars – each will have advantages and disadvantages. Your surgeon will discuss this with you in detail and, with your approval, will select the best technique for your particular case.
What are the common reasons for choosing a breast reduction surgery?
Who will perform my surgery?
We work with many amazing surgeons for Breast Reduction Surgery. You can look at their vast experience and professional profiles to help choose the surgeon right for you.
- Mr Vummiti Krishnan (BAAPS & BAPRAS accredited) – Consultant Breast Surgeon
- Mr Ramachandran Prasad – Consultant Breast Surgeon
- Mr Deemesh Oudit (BAAPS & BAPRAS accredited) – Consultant Plastic Surgeon
- Mr Hassan Shaaban (BAAPS & BAPRAS accredited) – Consultant Plastic Surgeon
- Mr Amar Deshpande (BAAPS & BAPRAS accredited) – Consultant Breast Surgeon

What will my scars look like?
A common breast reduction scar is in the shape of an anchor it will surround your areola and go vertically down to the breast crease, then horizontally along the natural breast crease.
How long will it take my wounds to heal?
This can vary due to people healing at different rates, but for most cases, it will be around 2-6 weeks. Patients usually return to work within 2 weeks of the surgery, however, to assure the best chance of healing, you should avoid any heavy physical exertion, bending over, lifting your arms over your head and any exercise until after three weeks post-op.
What are the common risks to breast reduction surgery?
Your chosen surgeon will discuss all risks with you before the surgery, however a few to note include:
- Scaring can be noticeable on the breasts, however, how visible the scars will be vary depending on the person and by the type of incision made. After surgery, scars will be red and swollen, but typically the scars will fade over time.
- There is a small chance of losing feeling in the nipples or breasts. Often this loss of sensation is temporary; lasting only a couple of months, which will vary depending on the person.
- The ability to breastfeed can be lost or reduced after surgery. For some women, there is still the possibility, depending on what type of reduction is carried out.
- There is a risk of uneven positioned nipples or breasts that are not the same size or shape.
Have I considered the alternatives to surgery?
In some cases, it is possible that surgery can be the last resort in living with or reducing the problem of having large breasts.
Alternative options may consist of:
- Weight loss – This can reduce the amount of fatty tissue around your breasts.
- Physiotherapy – Receiving recommended exercises can often help with reducing aches and pains caused by large breasts.
- Psychological – Receiving support for any emotional or mental health issues can be very beneficial.
- Specialised fitted bras – Most discomfort is caused by the wrong sized bras being worn. Getting a professional to fit a correctly sized bra may help reduce discomfort.
“Having large breasts lowered my self-esteem, which to some people was hard to understand. I found it difficult finding bras that actually fitted me. It was at this point I considered breast reduction surgery”.
“From a young age I had always felt self-conscious about my body especially my breasts. One was two cup sizes bigger than the other and they hung very low. Breast surgery is the best thing I have ever done”.
